The arrival of the new Wisden is always a source of joy, and particularly so this year as I immodestly race straight to the ‘Cricket Books’ section.
The anticipation is done justice by Robin Martin-Jenkins’ review, which is generous in its praise:
A well crafted account. The Rebel Tours reads very well and the descriptions of the cricket are excellent.
There is an irritated clack of the tongue, too, however. RMJ adds:
While there is plenty of first-hand comment from the South African players involved, the author has persuaded only two English “rebels” to talk. May claims he attempted to speak to all those involved, but one wonders how hard he tried, and his failure to gather the recollections and opinions of any of the main figures in the touring parties strips this book of much authority.
Tiresome as it may be, I must clarify a couple of points before The Rebel Tours is put to bed. More to follow in the near future.
